Answer

  1. The driver is driving up to London. He stops for a hitchhiker and gives him a lift, with the hitchhiker expressing his destination as Epsom for the races on Derby Day.
  2. The driver accelerates the car to a speed of ninety miles per hour, and later, he presses the accelerator to reach a speed of one hundred and twenty miles per hour. He does this to test the car's top speed, especially after the hitchhiker expresses doubt that it can reach that speed.
  3. A policeman on a motorcycle stops the driver after he exceeds the speed limit. The consequence is that the driver is informed he won't be driving his car for a very long time, and there is a possibility of imprisonment.
  4. The hitchhiker, who is skilled with his fingers, demonstrates his abilities by subtly taking items belonging to the driver, such as his belt, shoelace, and watch, without the driver noticing.
  5. The hitchhiker claims to be good at his job because he has "fantastic fingers," asserting that they are quicker and cleverer than the fingers of the best piano player in the world. He also refers to himself as a professional fingersmith.
  6. The hitchhiker takes the policeman's books from his pockets. These are the books containing information about the driver and the hitchhiker.
  7. The driver's initial reaction is alarm when he learns about the consequences of his speeding from the policeman. However, when he discovers the hitchhiker's skills and the items taken, he expresses admiration, calling the hitchhiker a "fantastic fellow" and appreciating his talents.
