Home working has moved in a few years from an unusual arrangement to an ordinary one. In my view its advantages do outweigh its drawbacks, though the balance is narrower than its enthusiasts usually admit. The clearest gain is time. A commute of an hour each way consumes roughly ten hours a week, and when that time is returned people overwhelmingly spend it on sleep, exercise and family rather than on more work. The second gain is geographic: an employer no longer restricted to one city can hire the best candidate rather than the nearest one, and a worker is no longer forced to move to an expensive capital to have a career at all. The disadvantages are real and are mostly social rather than practical. Junior staff learn their job largely by overhearing it, and that transmission does not survive a video call, so the people who lose most are the ones with least experience. Isolation is a genuine cost too, particularly for anyone living alone, and the boundary between work and home erodes when both occupy the same room. Weighing these, I still come down on the side of the advantages, but conditionally. The time and geography gains accrue automatically; the losses are largely fixable through deliberate effort — scheduled office days, formal mentoring, a clear finishing time. A benefit you get for free is worth more than a cost you can design out. The advantages therefore outweigh the disadvantages, provided employers treat the drawbacks as problems to be managed rather than as an acceptable price.
