Advantages and disadvantages essays

This type comes in two forms, and confusing them is the main way candidates lose marks on it.
Form one: describe
"What are the advantages and disadvantages of X?" You are asked to lay them out. No verdict is required, though a brief one in the conclusion does no harm.
Form two: judge
"Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" This is an opinion question wearing different clothes. Listing both sides and stopping does not answer it. You must reach a verdict and defend it.
The word outweigh is the signal. If it appears, the conclusion has to say which side wins and why — and the body paragraphs should be built to support that verdict rather than to catalogue points neutrally.
Depth over quantity
Two developed advantages beat five listed ones. A developed point has three parts: the claim, why it follows, and what it looks like in practice. Compare:

Online study removes the commute, which for a student living an hour from campus returns ten hours a week — time that in practice goes back into study rather than travel.
The second is one point, not three, but it is the one that scores.
Balance is not required
A common misconception is that this type demands equal treatment of both sides. It does not, particularly in the outweigh form. If you judge that the advantages win, it is entirely legitimate to give them more space — provided the disadvantages are still addressed seriously rather than dismissed.
