  1. Look at audioscript 1.13 on page 163. Write the underlined words in the correct category in the list below.
  2. Work in pairs. Check you know the meanings of the words. Decide if each word is a noun, adjective or verb, e.g. breeze = noun. Find out what other forms there are, e.g. breeze (n), breezy (adj).

  • cold → cool, chilly, sub-zero temperatures
  • sky → clear, bright, overcast
  • windy → breeze
  • rain → pours, showery, drizzle
  • warm / hot → mild, humid, scorching
  • weather in general → changeable

b)

  • cool (adj) = low in temperature but not cold, often in a way that feels pleasant
  • chilly (adj) = cold enough to make you feel uncomfortable
  • sub-zero temperatures (n) = below zero or freezing
  • clear (adj) = no clouds
  • bright (adj) = sunny and light
  • overcast (adj) = when the sky is dark with clouds
  • breeze (n) = gentle wind
  • pour (v) = to rain very hard
  • showery (adj) = when the weather has short periods of rain
  • drizzle (v) = light rain
  • mild (adj) = fairly warm
  • humid (adj) = if the weather is humid, you feel uncomfortable because the air is wet and it is usually hot
  • scorching (adj) = extremely hot
  • changeable (adj) = when the weather is likely to change, or changes often
