NB Although these verbs and phrases are used as synonyms in this context, it's worth pointing out to Ss other contexts where some of them can be used:

  • pretend to be = behave as if something is true → pretend to be asleep, pretend you didn't hear
  • switch = change from one thing to another → He's switched jobs.; She can switch from Italian to English easily.
  • grab = take hold of something suddenly → She grabbed my arm when she heard the scream.
  • swap = exchange → Let's swap phone numbers.
