Question

Use language from Exercise 1 to say what punishments people who commit the crimes in Exercise 2 on page 70 usually get in your country. Do you think these punishments are appropriate? Why? / Why not?

Answer

Answers vary from country to country, and mitigating factors mean that the sentence depends on the individual. In the UK, burglars get a minimum three-year sentence when they commit their third burglary, street robbery has a one-year minimum term, four years if a firearm is used. The minimum speeding fine is £100, and murder, kidnap and acts of terrorism have life sentences.
