- In the story there is a shop run by a sheep, possibly based on a shop near Christchurch, where the shopkeeper had a sheep-like voice. In the book, things in this shop float away off the shelves: in reality the shop was often flooded with water from a stream.
- A group of authors met in this pub, including J R R Tolkien (author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings) and C S Lewis (author of the Narnia books).
