  • feeling helpless = feeling that you can’t do anything to change or influence the world
  • In the hands of media barons = under the control of individuals who own the big newspapers and news outlets (e.g. Rupert Murdoch)
  • keep up with the news = know what’s happening in the latest news
  • foreign affairs = news about what is happening away from your country
  • suppress = stop, censor, prevent from being published
  • rolling 24-hour news = news that is on all the time, and keeps changing as new news stories come in
  • totally hooked on it = can’t stop watching or following it
  • speculation = here, making guesses about things
  • hard facts = providing facts that are indisputable and obviously true
