Tenses used after if:

  • present simple → If you aren’t back by 9:00 you'll be in trouble. / I won’t get angry if you break your promise, too!
  • past simple → If you weren’t always late, I wouldn’t mind so much.
  • past perfect → If it hadn’t stopped, I would have been on time.

b)

  • an unlikely situation in the present → Type 2
  • a real or probable situation in the present / future → Type 1
  • an imaginary situation contrary to facts in the past → Type 3
  • a general truth → Type 0
