An active sentence follows the pattern of subject - verb - object while a passive sentence is subject - verb - agent. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. The verb of the active sentence takes on a passive form. The subject of the active sentence becomes the agent of the passive precedent by 'by' or it can also be omitted completely if the agent is unimportant or unknown.
