According to the article, work has changed a lot over the last 1,000 years.

Pre-industrial age → people worked for food and goods necessary for survival; work structured by seasons; whole communities worked together; less division between 'work' and 'free time'; people worked for money; work was structured by the clock; there is a clear division between 'work' and 'free time'.

Now → the workplace has become a social community; many people work flexible hours; now we often work from home.

Similarities → the overall attitude to work - we work because we have to but we miss it if we don’t (as implied by the title).
