Work in pairs. Discuss the difference in meaning between each pair of words.

Answer

  1. If you pay by debit card, the money comes straight out of your account. If you pay by credit card, you pay later but have to pay interest on the money borrowed.
  2. A receipt is a piece of paper that shows you have paid for something. A bill is a piece of paper that shows what you have to pay.
  3. A coin is metal money. A note is paper money.
  4. A fare is the amount you pay to travel by train, plane, bus, taxi, etc. A fine is money you pay as a punishment for breaking a law or rule.
  5. The price is how much it costs to buy something. A fee is money you pay for professional services (e.g. lawyer) or to do something (e.g. a course).
  6. A reduction is a decrease in price. A refund is when the money you have spent on something is returned to you.
  7. Change means coins. Cash refers to real money (notes or coins) as opposed to a credit card or debit card.
