Question

  1. Listen to the answers to exercise 4b and write down which word is most stressed in each sentence.
  2. Why are these words stressed? Practise saying the sentences in exercise 4b with this stress pattern.

Answer

a)

  1. ... their husbands.
  2. Lady Mary enjoyed ...
  3. ... as an adult.
  4. ... smallpox in Turkey.
  5. ... smallpox to England.

b)

These words wouldn’t usually be stressed, but are in this case to show contrast and emphasise which information has been corrected. For example, in sentence 2, enjoyed is stressed to contrast it with the incorrect didn’t enjoy in the original sentence.
