The conventions for writing dates in figures are different in British and American English. In British English, the day of the month goes first and the month second; in American English, it is the reverse. This means that Christmas Day in 2011 would be written in figures as 12/25/2011 in North America and as 25/12/2011 in other parts of the English-speaking world.
