Circle all the examples of the past continuous in the texts and match them to the corresponding use in the grammar map. Then write a sentences for each use.

USE

  1. To talk about an action in progress at a particular time in the past.
  2. To talk about two continuous actions happening at the same time in the past.
  3. To talk about an activity in progress in the past interrupted by another event.
  4. To set the scene at the beginning of a story and to give background information.
  5. To talk about a temporary situation in the past.

The popsicle

  • During a freezing winter evening in San Francisco in 1905, Frank was mixing a soft drink of powdered soda and water. (1)
  • He forgot about it and left the glass with the stir stick in it outside overnight. (3)

The trampoline

  • He had the idea while he was visiting a circus with his parents. (1)
  • He watched trapeze artists as they were bouncing into a safety net below after dropping from their bars, and he was fascinated. (2)

Braille

  • He was attending an institute for blind children in Paris when he started to experiment with different ways of reading just using touch. (1)

Earmuffs
