A NEW FORM OF CHILD LABOUR?

Kids of today are extremely tuned in to the digital world because they have grown up in a world where the technology is advancing around them every single day, and have never actually known a world without social media, mobile phones or the computers.

We are all familiar with a the term 'influencers, but 'kid influencers' may be a relatively new thing that refers to children under the age of 16 who are building a presence on social media platforms. They share their videos, vlogs and images of their hobbies, whether it be sports, fashion or food, and turn them into the creative influencer campaigns of for toy and clothing brands. To ensure their safety online, a the majority of these kids' platforms are run by the their parents, who can profit from their children's participation in this commercial activity, but also have the responsibility to safeguard their human rights.

In France, kid influencers have recently been identified as a new form of child labour. The money they can earn and hours worked creating and posting content online are protected under French law. Any earnings they make are safeguarded in a bank account that they can only access when they turn 16.
