USE
I wish … + past simple
- To express a desire or regret about the present - Example: I wish I had more free time.
I wish … + past perfect
- To express a regret about the past - Example: I wish I had studied harder in college.
I wish … + would + base form
- To express a desire about the immediate future or a complaint - Example: I wish you would stop interrupting me.
PREFERENCES
GENERAL
- prefer + -ing form / noun + to + … / … - Example: I prefer (playing) tennis to (playing) golf.
- prefer + infinitive + rather than + … / … - Example: She prefers to cook rather than have dinner at a restaurant.
SPECIFIC
PRESENT / FUTURE PREFERENCES
- 'd (would) prefer + infinitive / noun + rather than + base form / noun - Example: I'd prefer to eat at home rather than go to a restaurant.
- 'd (would) rather + base form + … - Example: I'd rather go shopping than stay at home.
- I'd (would) rather + different subject + past simple - Example: I'd rather you called me before coming over.
PAST PREFERENCES
- 'd (would) rather + have + … - Example: I'd rather have studied for that exam.
