Describe your reaction to the poem. What do you think its theme is?
Answer
It is a song about freedom. It tells us that we should be aware and thankful for the freedom we have. The theme of the poem is also to become free of your fears. If the caged bird overcame his fear of the unknown, he would be as free as the free bird to live out his life and his desires as he pleased. The poem shows that those who can overcome these fears are the only ones that are really free.
