Answer
The Maori are the native people of New Zealand.
There are around 700,000 Maori people in New Zealand.
Mataora was a Maori hero who was taught the art of tattooing by a spirit in the supernatural world. He then taught it to the rest of his people, connecting him to the culture of tattooing.
A Maori tattoo can tell you which tribe a person belongs to, who their family members were, and how important their family is in the community. Tattoos on different sides of the body or face provide information about the person's father's and mother's families.
Both Maori men and women have tattoos, but traditionally, women only have them done on their lips and chin, while men have tattoos on various parts of their bodies.
