Answer

  • The country referred to in the text is Honduras, located in Central America.
  • There is significant crime in Honduras primarily due to several factors, including the presence of organized criminal groups or gangs, high levels of poverty and inequality, drug trafficking activities, political instability, and weak law enforcement and judicial systems. Gangs, in particular, play a significant role in perpetuating violence and criminal activities, with many young people joining gangs as a means of economic survival or protection.
  • To address the issue of youth involvement in crime and provide alternative opportunities, the coffee company Kenco has initiated the Coffee vs Gangs scheme. This program aims to help young people by providing them with vocational training and education in the coffee industry. Specifically, Kenco selects 20 young students from urban areas in Honduras each year and takes them to a farm in rural Honduras. There, they receive training in various aspects of coffee cultivation and production, along with education in subjects such as mathematics, language, and business management. Additionally, at the end of the program, the students are provided with financial support to start their own businesses, thereby offering them alternative paths to employment and entrepreneurship outside of gang involvement.
