Listen to the biography of Nelson Mandela. Number the events 1-9 in the order that you hear.

Answer

  1. Mandela joins the African National Congress (ANC), a political party.
  2. The South African government introduces a system of laws called apartheid.
  3. Protestors are killed in a demonstration, and the ANC becomes an illegal organisation.
  4. Mandela and other activists are arrested.
  5. He goes to trial and receives a life sentence.
  6. He spends 27 years in prison. People protest and he is finally released.
  7. He wins the Nobel Peace Prize.
  8. All black people can vote for the first time, and Mandela becomes the president.
  9. He retires from politics.
