Work in groups of three. Each student reads one of the problems again to find the answers to the questions.

Answer

1 - Should I choose the job or my girlfriend?

  1. Larry, Vanessa, Vanessa's parents, Larry's friends
  2. Larry has asked his girlfriend Vanessa to marry him and has accepted a new job 300 miles away.
  3. Larry was confused about whether to take the great new job or split up with the love of his life; he was worried in case he never met anyone else like her again.

2 - Professional football or accountancy?

  1. Oscar, his parents
  2. Oscar had a trial with a local football club when he was 15. He has now been accepted on an accountancy course at university.
  3. Oscar was confused because he thought he was good enough to play football for his club and his country, but his parents wanted him to go to university. He was worried about making the wrong choice.

3 - It's my mother-in-law or me!

  1. Astrid, her husband, her father-in-law, her mother-in-law, her two children
  2. Astrid has been married to her husband for ten years and has had two children. She has tried to help her mother-in-law as much as possible when her husband died. She has told her husband that they have to find a care home for his mother or else she will leave him.
  3. Astrid was finding it difficult to cope with the situation and had told her husband to choose between her and his mother. She was worried because her husband wouldn't discuss it with her.
