Question

Listen to people talking about four of the laws suggested on the website.Which ones are they? What reasons and examples do they give?

Answer

  1. 'Drivers should have a trial driving licence for a couple of years before they are allowed to have a full licence. They should only get a full licence if they have shown that they are safe on the road.' Motorcycles have a trial licence and cars are more dangerous than motorcycles. People need a lot more practise before they're ready to go out on the roads. There should be an extra test to prove that someone is a competent driver.
  2. 'I think that hunting and harming animals for sport should be banned.' People shouldn't kill animals for the sake of it - in the past, people killed animals to eat the meat.
  3. 'I would make it the law that if you go and live in a foreign country, it should be compulsory to learn the language of that country.' This is important to integrate into society and make friends.
  4. 'The long-term unemployed should have to do voluntary work to get unemployment benefit from the government.' There are lots of projects that aren't being done because there isn't the money or people to do them. They could do something constructive to help society and their local community (e.g. fixing up local community centres, painting churches, working on local schools to make them better places for learning). It would also get them used to the routine of working, making it easier for them to get back into work when they eventually find a job.
