Question

  1. Read the article, then work in pairs. Explain why the things below are important in each person's night out.
  2. Read the article again, then answer the questions.

Answer

a)

  • Jiao Wu: BPT (Beijing Party Time) is the 'time zone' of Beijing's night life. Jiao goes out at midnight, when most people are going to bed. Bling is the name of a nightclub that Jiao and his friends go to. (In informal English, bling means expensive objects such as jewellery that people wear in order to be noticed.) At Bling, the DJ sits in a Bentley car in the middle of the dance floor. A Bentley is a very expensive luxury car. Ghost Street is a road where the restaurants stay open all night. Jiao and his friends go there at around 4.00 a.m.
  • Hasson: On Saturday nights Hassan and his friends go driving in the fashionable centre of Tehran. They write their mobile phone numbers on pieces of paper, which they throw into girls' cars. Girls only read the phone numbers of men who drive smart cars (a smart car is one which is new and fashionable).
  • Ewen: Only 70 people live on the Isle of Eigg, so Ewen doesn't have much choice about where to go out. The community hall is a building used for public events and it is where people go on Saturday nights. Ewen and his friends go at about 9 o'clock. One unusual thing about life on the island is that young and old people socialise together, so people of all ages go to the community hall. Afolk band from the mainland performs at the community hall on Saturday nights and people dance.

b)

  1. There's a lot more choice than in the past and people go to nightclubs much more. Before, people usually went out for dinner and then to a karaoke bar.
  2. Because one of the men who threw a phone number into the car she was in was her boyfriend.
  3. Young and old people go to the community hall, but the young people stay out much later.
